Skir Dhu is a small community located in Victoria County on Cape Breton Island. Skir Dhu is a Gaelic name that when translated into English means Black Rock. It is part of the stretch of Cape Breton Coastline known as the North Shore, which makes up part of the Cabot Trail. This part of Cape Breton was settled by Scottish homesteaders 150-200 years ago. Skir Dhu is also part of the St. Ann's Loop which according to their website "North Shore/St Ann’s is a uniquely artistic community. From Goose Cove to Wreck Cove, in shops, galleries, and studios, highly skilled artists and artisanal crafters offer their wares wrought of clay, glass, leather, wood, pewter, iron, paint, fibre, and canvas, drawing their inspiration from, and reflecting the beauty of the Bay area. Many artisans invite you into their workshops, too, where you can watch them create."
Researching Skir Dhu, I found that there is an historic cottage to rent called "Maggie's Cottage". According to the description "The son of the original settler, Angus Smith, built the house from wood cut, milled and planed by hand for his bride Maggie. Since she outlived her husband by many years the property became know as 'Maggie's Place'."
The picture featured on this page for Skir Dhu belongs to the ad I found for a Romantic Oceanfront Home, located in Skir Dhu. This ad mentions swimming in both the French River and a local swimming hole - a spring fed pond.
