Scotia's Showcase - May 29, 2020 - Southville

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

Southville is located in Digby County near Weymouth and Weymouth Falls.

Considered by some to be one of the most important artists in Nova Scotia, Harold Cromwell was born in Southville in 1919. For 6 decades he captured daily life in Weymouth and Weymouth Falls, creating his art using pencil and pen and ink. He is the only black Nova Scotia folk artist represented in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's collection. He also had his works represented by a gallery in New York City. To learn more about Harold and to see some examples of his works, please visit the links following links:

The Southville Church of Christ was designated as a heritage site in 1999. The one and one-half storey wooden church was built on Langford Road in 1889.

Vintage Farms in Southville holds an annual Walk of Lights to celebrate the Christmas season. Organizer Rowena LeRoy organizes this even with her parents as a way for her family to do something for the community at Christmas and in turn help others. For the 10th annual walk, over $1600 was raised to give to local families in need at Christmastime.
