Sadly, June 11, 2021 has come and gone with no sign of Troy Cook. He has now been missing for 23 years.
June 11, 2020 will mark exactly 22 years since Troy Cook disappeared from Truro, Nova Scotia and his family is desperate for answers. Troy is the oldest child of Tom and Lorraine Cook. From an interview on the Nighttime Podcast with host, Jordan Bonaparte and Troy's father, Tom, in January 2018, I learned that one word to describe Troy was social!!! He loved his social life, got his license when he was 16 and loved meeting girls. If he saw a girl he wanted to talk to, he didn't care who she was with, he would sit down and talk to her. He also enjoyed hanging out with friends. After he turned 19 he began frequenting a local bar called Chevy's.
Troy, his parents, and his brother, Mike, who was 12 when his older brother disappeared, were very close and enjoyed spending time together. Troy loved to swim, and camp and ride his motorbike. Tom bought him his first motorbike when he was just 5 years old.
Troy worked at the Atlantic Superstore in Truro throughout high school and once he graduated, they hired him full time. Once he was earning a regular pay cheque he decided to move into a 2 bedroom flat on Willow Street in Truro, only a 5 minute walk from work. His roommate was a coworker from the Superstore. He had only been living there for about 3 weeks when he disappeared.
Troy did not have a phone so if he needed to contact his parents he would call them from a payphone. His dad made sure to drop into his workplace regularly to see if there was anything he needed and if so, would drop off care packages to him. Although he had his own place, Troy kept in regular contact with his family and visited his parents and little brother a couple of times a week. While he was there he would have a good supper and do laundry. The evening of Wednesday, June 10, 1998 was one of those nights. The family enjoyed a barbecue, watched some movies and Troy did some laundry and spent the night there.
On the morning of Thursday June 11, 1998, Tom drove Troy back to his apartment and dropped him off just before 10am. On the drive back to his apartment Troy did not mention having any plans that day or anywhere to be, and father and son made plans to meet for supper at a local restaurant the next evening, Friday, June 12, 1998. When Tom dropped Troy off at his apartment the morning of June 11th, he was in a hurry as he had an appointment for the car at 10am and then had to head straight from the garage to work. He saw Troy walk towards his driveway but he could not see the driveway or the door. Tom could not even see if there were cars parked in the driveway. He is unsure if Troy ever made it inside his apartment. This is the last known sighting of Troy Cook.
It is reported that Troy, or someone pretending to be Troy, called his supervisor at Atlantic Superstore, Sharon Tucker, as he was due to work later that day, at 10:39am on Thursday, June 11th, 1998, from a phone booth located at the Tim Horton's in Bible Hill at Wright Avenue and Pictou Road. Google Maps indicates this is 4-5km from Troy's apartment - about a 7 min drive and a 40 minute walk. Ms. Tucker reports that the caller sounded like Troy but she cannot be 100% sure. She said he sounded sick, like he had a cold, and indicated that he would not be in to work as he was not feeling well. Troy's family, who spent the previous night with him, and Troy's father, who had dropped him off about 40 minutes earlier, have never indicated he was not feeling well.
On Friday, June 12, 1998, Troy's family went to the restaurant where they were all supposed to meet, but he wasn't there. They waited 15 minutes before calling his work and some friends. No one had seen him so Tom went to the RCMP as that who has jurisdiction in their community. However, Troy went missing from Truro, so Tom had to file the missing persons report with the Truro police.
It is not like Troy to not keep in contact with his family or friends. He had not indicated he was leaving town and his wallet and ID were found in his apartment and his bank account has not been touched. Troy was born on July 16, 1978.
