Two Titanic crew members - one who survived and sadly one who did not - were both born on November 17.
Frank Long was born November 17th 1880 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. He boarded the Titanic on April 6, 1912 in Southampton to work as part of the engineering crew as a trimmer. His older brother, William, boarded with him and also worked as a trimmer. Frank was 31 years old when he died during the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. His body, if recovered, was never identified. His brother, William also perished in the sinking and his body, if recovered, was never identified.
Mrs Annie Martha Martin (nee Woodland) was born on November 17th, 1872 in St. Martin, Guernsey, Channel Islands. She, too, embarked on the Titanic on April 6, 1912 in Southampton to work on the Titanic's victualling crew as a stewardess. She gave her address as her sister, Phoebe's address. An interesting sidenote here is that at the age of 14, Phoebe tried to poison their father by attempting to have him drink tea laced with oxalic acid. After consuming a small amount the father realized there was something wrong. The tea was said to have contained enough poison to kill three or four men. Phoebe was sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour for the attempted murder of their father.
Annie survived the sinking of the Titanic on Lifeboat 11 and arrived in New York onboard the Carpathia on April 18, 1912. Lifeboat 11 was the sixth lifeboat lowered on the starboard side and held approximately 50 passengers, about 9 of whom were female ships' crew like Annie. One of the most notable passengers in lifeboat 11 was Master Hudson Trevor Allison, an 11 month old first class passenger who escaped into the lifeboat with his nursemaid Alice Cleaver. Trevor was the only member of his family to survive. His 2 year old sister, Helen Loraine Allison, was the only first or second class child to perish in the sinking.
