On a chilly December day in 1928, in the small town of Orrville, Ohio, four-year-old, Melvin Charles Horst disappeared. His case, which remains unsolved to this day, continues to haunt the community and is the oldest missing child case in the United States currently listed on the NCMEC website. Melvin went missing nearly four years before the Lindbergh baby in March 1932.

The Day Melvin Vanished

Melvin was last seen playing near his home on the afternoon of December 27, 1928. The little boy with bright blue eyes and brown hair wore a stocking cap, sweater, and a brown overcoat, and carried a red toy firetruck he had received for Christmas. According to his friends, they had been playing in a vacant lot off Chestnut Street near the railroad tracks, only one block away from Melvin’s home. When the sun began to set, Melvin told them his friends he needed to walk home. When his parents called him in for supper and received no response, they began to look for Melvin. All they found was his firetruck on the front lawn of their home. The Horsts called authorities at 7 pm and an hour and a half later, an extensive search for little Melvin was underway.

The Investigation and False Leads

The disappearance made nationwide headlines, capturing the public’s attention during the United States’ Prohibition era. A year after Melvin disappeared, a bootlegger and his son were arrested for his alleged abduction. A witness claimed to have seen them lure Melvin into their home. It was later revealed that the witness had lied, and the men were found innocent in a second trial for the kidnapping of Melvin Horst.

In a shocking twist, the witness and his father were arrested in 1930, confessing to murdering Melvin inside a garage after he caught them drinking whiskey. The two were not convicted as the confessions were later deemed to have been coerced. No arrests have been made since 1930 in the disappearance of Melvin Horst.

In 2017 Melvin's niece called police and asked about his case. Police obtained DNA samples from family members, including Melvin's sister, who was only 2 when he went missing for a databased at the Ohio Attorney General's office. Melvin's sister still his firetruck.

Melvin’s disappearance remains one of Ohio’s greatest mysteries. A century later, the question of what happened to the young boy still lingers. The case is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community in times of crisis. It also underscores the challenges law enforcement faced in an era before modern technology and DNA testing.

The story of Melvin Horst is not just a tale of a missing child; it is a narrative that has shaped the way we approach and understand missing persons cases today. It reminds us that behind every cold case file, there are families and communities forever changed, holding onto hope for answers.
